Greg Davies review

Greg Davies and Tina Jackson

Considering this is Greg Davies's first attempt at solo stand-up, the 6'8" comedian stands head and shoulders above the competition both literally and figuratively setting the benchmark by which all comedy shows at The MET will surely be measured.

His touring show, Firing Cheeseballs At A Dog, is a collection of autobiographical anecdotes that he proudly boasts are both "free of consequence and devoid of meaning". Davies documents the spontaneous moments of his life in his Book Of Pithy Tales which he dips into randomly throughout the show, with many memoirs related to his time as a depressed teacher, when he educated "the strangest group of human beings ever assembled in one place". Like the story of lunatic pupil Marwood, who, Davies claims, wanted to be either a train driver or a gynaecologist because, "At the end of the day I just like tunnels."

The whirlwind tour of bizarre moments continued as Davies recounts his days at school, covering nicknames (big respect to Fish Face for sharing her childhood moniker!) and some touching but always funny segment about his parents and family.

It was the ultimate feel good show that had a capacity MET crowd in hysterics from start to finish. And the message amongst the madness is this: savour the moment however stupid you'll be happier for it.
